HWG Sababa earns a European podium: Italy takes third place at the first hackathon dedicated to space cybersecurity

Milan, October 23rd, 2025 HWG Sababa has brought Italy to the podium of the European Space Cybersecurity Hackathon, the first European hackathon entirely focused on cybersecurity in space. The #bucailsatellite team, composed of members of the company’s Offensive Team, achieved third place in Madrid, where the event took place on October 17–18.

During 24 hours of intense collaboration, satellite engineers, cybersecurity specialists, startups, and researchers joined forces to design tangible prototypes – tools and software – aimed at protecting satellites, GNSS systems, and telecommunications networks. The hackathon brought together expertise in artificial intelligence, post-quantum cryptography, and space cybersecurity, emphasizing the importance of securing software supply chains to ensure the resilience of space systems.

“This event was much more than a technical exercise: it demonstrated how crucial it is to protect software supply chains the backbone of space system resilience. From GPS spoofing to satellite jamming and supply chain attacks, the threats are real – and Artificial Intelligence has now become a core component of every industry” – said William Ferguson, Hackathon Architect.

The third-place finish marks a significant milestone in HWG Sababa’s ongoing investment and development in the space sector.

“The security of satellite communication systems – and their resilience against cyberattacks – is a key focus for our company. We have already invested significant resources and built a dedicated team of experts to support the industry. The result achieved by our Offensive Team at the Space Cybersecurity Hackathon is a source of great pride: it’s a tangible confirmation of our ability to enhance cyber resilience and awareness in space” – commented Alessio Aceti, CEO of HWG Sababa.

Space continues to prove itself as a strategic domain, not only for technological innovation but also for economic and geopolitical security. HWG Sababa is strengthening its presence and expertise in the sector, leveraging the company’s extensive cybersecurity experience.

“This achievement is the result of the daily dedication and teamwork of our Offensive Team, which blends deep technical knowledge with a passion for cyber research. Being among the top teams in such an international setting confirms the soundness of our strategy and our ability to bring concrete value to a rapidly evolving sector” – concluded Daniele Farronato, Head of the Offensive Team.
